     Rev. Francis Foucachon, a native of France with a Huguenot family heritage that extends to the 16th century Protestant Reformation, will present "Calvin and the Huguenots" at the Nuart Theater this Friday, October 30, at 3 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public.
     The lecture, the fifth in the College's yearlong Calvin Lecture Series marking the 500th anniversary of John Calvin's birth, is on the eve of day that Protestants celebrate the Reformation worldwide.
     Foucachon is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) and has served as a church planter in France with Missions to the World. With its speaker series, New Saint Andrews joins an international and interdenominational commemoration of John Calvin's life and work. New Saint Andrews, which is firmly rooted in the Calvinist tradition, is a limited-enrollment classical Christian liberal arts college located on Friendship Square in Moscow, Idaho.

Last Disputatio of the Class of 2009!

Can you believe it? We just had our last Disputatio as a class at NSA?

God has been very good to us, allowing us to travel thus far. I am very grateful for such a wonderful class, and I hope we all keep in touch. To that affect, I plan to keep THIS blog going as a place where we as Alumni can come and keep getting NSA info, or see what’s going on in Moscow.

Here are the two videos I presented at Disputatio.

The first is a slideshow of some photos I through together of our 4 years here. It is only a tiny sampler of all the photos I have!
The second is a compilation of spliced videos from our 4 years. Again, only a sampler of what I have! I had to cut some GREAT stuff! (such as some of our declamations).

Dr. Erb did a wonderful job conducting and organizing the concert! I believe that this is the largest choir in the Moscow region.

Represented were: the NSA choir, the Christ Church Adult Choir, the Christ Church Youth Choir and the Trinity Reformed Youth Choir.

The concert begins with the blowing of the horn calling the singers in – very impressive!

30th Anniversary

My parents celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary this month! And not just thirty years, but thirty years of loving each other, sacrificing for each other, being an example to us kids, and teaching us through their lives and their instruction how to fear and love God. I am especially thankful for my parents this Thanksgiving!

Still as much in love as ever, and I hear even more so!

The photo is a bit blurry, but that is a Chateauneuf-du-Pape from 1989! I hear it was exquisite.

A Huguenot Tradition - Advent Breakfast

The French are not big on breakfast. Often very light like a Croissant with coffee. However there are four breakfasts in the year which are exceptionally special. There is a Huguenot tradition in France of having a special advent breakfast that my father grew up with and then did with us, and that I am now continuing. It is often not a huge breakfast, mostly because we would otherwise be late for church, but it is always very special and unique. There are a few things that always accompany it, such as a tangerine with a candle stuck in it, as well as Papilottes (which we didn't have this time since you can't get them in the states. Papilottes are a Christmas-only chocolate that is wrapped in a foil with a joke inside and sometimes a little firecracker.)

Other than those, it varies from time to time. This morning we had eggs, toast, and breakfast sausage; a donut (with coconut on top), fruit cake, a slice of pound cake, a chocolate cigar, peanut butter cups, and hot cider (and of course the orange).

A Happy Announcement - December 24th, 2007

Something happened exactly one month ago, on the Eve of Christmas, which I have not blogged about due to a rather full life. But, it is most certainly worthy of note. It all started about two in the afternoon, when my favorite person, a most beautiful, wonderful, godly, cheerful, delightful, pleasant, funny, cute, adorable, intelligent, classically educated, (and did I mention beautiful?) girl came over to spend "a few hours" with me. We went four-wheeling. It was below freezing, a bit windy. We four-wheelered right onto the top of the big "wheat dunes" (now tilled, frozen, and covered in snow). The day was absolutely magnificent. The sun was shining through the clouds in long bright rays towards the South, and Moscow Mountain was looking a blue-ish, grayish colour which made it look like it was a painting rather than real life, except for the vividness of the colours. The snow was wisping over the hills all around us.

After about an hour of that, we returned onto our land. I told Lydia that we could park on the flatter part, out near Mr. Merkles old truck, and take a walk. We arrived there and got off. We started walking in the direction of our house, and I commented to Lydia, "look at that rock, I don't remember that being there..." to the side of the path in front of us lay a large, 400 lb block of solid stone. We had been talking, quite "randomly," about how nice European houses were all made of stone, and how that was nice. "Now that's the kind of stone I want for the cornerstone of my house one day," I told Lydia, trying to sound off-hand. We walked towards it, and I stopped in front of it. I was fumbling with something in my pocket. Then Lydia let go of my arm, and went and looked on the other side of the stone. She had her back to me as she did this. On the other side of the stone was written "The Cornerstone of the Future home of Daniel and Lydia Foucachon - December 2007 - Psalm 128." She looked at it a bit, and turned around. I was on one knee, and was holding a ring. She said yes!

We were out there probably about an hour, and it was really cold! But I had a provision for this. Sitting on the edge of our land, in all its glory, sat The Indefatigable, Mr. Merkles old Ford 72 pickup truck. In the truck were blankets, two candles, my camera (had to have some pictures), and hot chocolate, which we completely forgot about.

After spending some time getting warmer in the truck, we headed back in the four-wheeler. My parents were waiting for us, so we got our first round of congratulations which, thanks to Valerie filming, was filmed. It has now been a month, and a wonderful month it has been! I didn't think it possible, but I love Lydia more every day! Sorry guys, the best is taken...

Milton on the Vaudois

This poem was written by John Milton concerning the persecution of the Vaudois (Waldenses). Milton, along with Sir Morland, used his gift of prose to try to stop the Duke of Savoy from massacring these French Huguenots.

On Baptism

This is a very rough translation from the original manuscript written in old French on the History of the Vaudois Churches in the Piemont mountains. I read this section on Baptism (which I found is a lot easier to just read than to actually translate!) and I found that some of the things sounded strangely like the "new" Federal Vision stuff...

We are pretty certain that the Vaudoises are our ancestors, specifically Henri Arnaud, a Vaudois Huguenot pastor who led an army of Huguenots back into the Piemont Valley in 1690 (?). This book was given to my father by his father, and tells of the persecutions of the Huguenots during this time period.

On Baptism

The first [sacrament] is called baptism, that is to say in our language, washing by water or from a river, or from a fountain. It must be administered in the Name of the Father, Son, and of the Holy Spirit, to those who, first of all, by the grace of God the Father, looking to his Son, and by participation of [in?] Jesus Christ, who has redeemed us, and by the renewing of the Holy Spirit, who imprints living Faith in our hearts, the sins of those baptized are forgiven, and they are received in grace : and after having persevered [in grace], they are saved in Jesus Christ.

The Baptism with which we are baptized, and that with which our Lord himself wanted to be baptized, in order to accomplish all justice, just as he wanted to be circumcised, is [the baptism] which he commanded his Apostles to baptize with.

Moreover, this baptism is visible and material; [the baptism] does not make a person either good or bad, as we learn in the Scripture of Simon Magus, and of St. Paul. And the reason that the baptism is administered in the midst of the congregation of the faithful is so that he who is received is reputed and held by all for a Brother and Christian, and so that all might pray for him, that he be Christian of the heart, just as he is externally considered to be a Christian. And it is for this reason that we present the Children to Baptism. Those who the children touch the closest ought to do this, just as their parents do, and those to whom God has given this charity.

A Dream

I interrupt my study to tell you of a dream. Actually, it is my good friend, librarian, and valet, George Harrell, who had this dream some time ago, and told me about it today. It is a dark story. There was no humour in this dream. It was serious. I shall try to relate the narrative as faithfully as possible.

Once upon a time, there were some men in a town called Moscow, in the great Northwest. There was a great and grave meeting amongst the important men of the town. It took place in the Logos Fieldhouse, but it wasn't quite the Logos Fieldhouse (Let the reader understand the nature of dreams). It was quite dark, like during a wedding reception, and in the center lay a large, long, solid table, like the one found in Bucers. The ceiling above was a lofty vaulted ceiling, like a cathedral. There was a monastic feel to this event. I'm sure there was a large fire roaring in a stone fireplace--at least this was the feel. Around it were gathered these men of Moscow, discussing something important, with bunches of paper laid out in front of them. Suddenly, one of the men, a certain gentlemen from across the sea, stood and starting lecturing about the glories of the French Revolution, and continued for some time. All present listened intently. Then another gentlemen, a local who's father took care of the towns insurance, stood and said a derogatory statement, now forgotten (let the reader understand the nature of dreams) about the French and leur Révolution. He then sat. All was quite. you could have heard a mouse on the stone floor. The Frenchmen then sent his glove flying across the table, hitting the head which contained the mouth that dared utter those words of meprise concerning glorious France. All men sat aghast. Then one of the leaders among them stood. "He has thrown the glove. We must fulfil ritual." Upon these words, everyone stood up. Some sided with the Frenchman, some with the gentleman who was hit with the glove (who was also a librarian). All headed for the south entrance. Upon exiting, there was no parking lot. Instead was a green field, surrounded by a stone wall, with bleacher type benches surrounding the small field on all side. Every last person we knew, under the age of 25, was seated upon the bleachers, looking down at the two gentlemen. In the middle of this clearing, stood a man, dressed entirely in black and holding a large staff (he is commonly known as Jody, the mover of books). To his left and right stood two large swords, wedged loosely in the soft earth. The opponents were each handed a pair of long, black, leather gloves by those faithful to them, which they pulled on. All was silent once again. The man in black started going through the rules. "You must wait for my command. You may not..." etc. He had done this many times before. The two faced each other. All was silent, and George Harrell's dream slipped into fogginess.

Multae Mortes, Una Vita - The Mysterious Ways of God

The Easter service was glorious! In his sermon, Dr. Leithart talked about how Jesus was not abandoned to Sheol as it would have seemed to everyone seeing Him die. In the same way we will never be abandoned to Sheol. Though we pass at times "into Sheol," as David did, Christ went ahead of us, and was raised the third day. His death was not pointless, and neither are our "Sheol's," as we too shall be raised. A new paradigm is set: a seed must go down into the ground and die in order that it might be raised to life.

We sang, "God Moves in a Mysterious Way," which is one of my favourite hymns:

God moves in a mysterious way

we're leaving tomorrow morning with several more bags than we came with

It has been a crazy, but very full and blessed ten days!!

I'm connected through the free wifi at the McDonald's that was walking distance from our old house

I've taken over 3,000 pictures so far, walked through Lyon several times, especially enjoying the medieval section and the Roman Amphitheater, bought several books, and was given 2 full boxes of books (mostly relating to philosophy and religion) from my uncle, eaten many amazing meals, many of which were enjoyed with extended family over several hours, and thoroughly enjoyed all the beauty around me!! And most of all, I've been able to spend some good time with my grand-parents, and with my Suzanne, Alex, Matt, and Timmy, though not nearly enough!!

I forgot how fast they drive here, and how narrow the roads are!! (now I realize why I have tended to drive faster than most Americans..)

Rather random... I found it in My Documents and remembered that I wanted to post it:
Deborah and me with Aaron Shupe and the Rubberband at Trinity Fest.

And.... Last but not least, my new truck: I am now the proud owner of Mr. Merkle's, green, 34 year-old, ancient, beautiful, powerful, gas guzzling, heavy duty, Ford 72, 250, purrs-like-a-kitten (though asthma smitten kitten), stick shift, cool, etc truck. It's in perfect shape except for a few small things that don't work, such as: cd-player, rear-view mirror, heat, blinkers (at least not right one), odometer, speedometer, hand brake, etc.. :-)

It's so much fun to drive! Now I just need to figure an as-cheap-as-possible insurrance. (since I don't think I should trust it as my main car without investing a good bit into...which would be hard at present)

We caught some great fish, but I found something out. I get seasick. Real seasick! I "fed the fish" as the skipper called it, 5 times I think I still looked a bit green when we were holding the fish at the end... But I still caught 2 ~12 pound fish! And David caught a 22 lb. Lincod! (sp?) Deb and Val got some good fish too. I was pretty miserable, but I think I might do it again.

I took part in a shooting competition at the Cernik's this morning. It was a lot of fun even though I didn't do all that well. (I did hit the paper every time except for once, and hit two in the black) but not enough to win anything

The Herold's are the one's who won everything today. George hit 6 in the center with a 30/06, and Anne (Annie Oakley) hit 4. (I think she was using 30/06 as well). Congratulations to them!!

Brad (Littlejohn) put on a Birthday party for Brad B. at his house. It was a blast!
We ate, sang, played cards, opened gifts (at least Brad did), had some live music, and then watched 20 minutes of What About Bob?. When all the girls were gone the leftover guys watched The Godfather part II.

We had a wonderful worship service today, and sang some songs I had not sung in a while, but there was one thing missing! A Toi la Gloire is a very famous Easter hymn that I have grown up singing, and I was very surprised to find that it is not a common US hymn.. It's weird to have an Easter and not sing it... The first track playing on my blog is the original composition by Handel. It's very beautiful.

Easter Party

The Courtneys and boarders had the Freshmen and Sophomores over for a Easter Party.
We had an indoor easter egg hunt (snow outside...), played games, sung Psalms, and had a delicious dinner!

Having been plunged straight back into school, it is only now that I can write something about our trip to France. We went there to clean out our house in Lyon, and move all our stuff (the remainder that we did not bring to Idaho) to our country house for storage. It was a packed, and quite exciting ten days! Here is a little exerpt from one of the days:

We pack the 2o ft. moving truck with our stuff, and are finished by mid-afternoon.
We leave for Lompnieu (our country house). I'm in the truck with my brother-in-law, and my parents and rest of the family and two nephews are in the van ahead of us.
20 min. outside Lyon, on the autoroute, the gears of start slipping: we have broken down!
on the side of the autoroute for 1.5 hours waiting for tow-truck.
Van with the rest of the family turn around to meet us on side of road. Meanwhile in van, one vomiting nephew.
Sun sets.
Tow-truck arrives and tries to lift truck onto it.
Front of tow-truck is lifted instead of truck. (apparently a first for the mechanic...)
Call new tow-truck.
towed to garage. 9 p.m. Crazy truck drive... almost takes roof off truck under a low bridge..
All of us (ten to a 9 passenger van) packed in van that still smells acutely of my adorable nephews vomit. 15 min. from home, Timothée vomits again. Finally home, hit the bed.
Next morning spent on phone (charged at international rate) trying to get the rental company to give us a new van (van stayed at garage, dead, with all our stuff in it). A whole morning, many phone calls, (Insurrance company and rental company throwing responsibility back and forth), we finally get them to send a new truck.
Alex, my brother-in-law, arrives with "truck" provided, which is actually a large moving van, but not near the size of other truck, which was full of our stuff!
More phone calls...
The "last" (yeah right..) available 20 ft. truck in the city of Lyon "becomes" available. Alex goes to get it downtown lyon, experiencing delays because of strikes (the current big strikes about the labor law).
Finally appropriate size truck arrives and we go to garage to transfer stuff from dead truck to new truck.
Mid-afternoon to about 7:30 we unload.
Drive back to Lyon. Arrive two hours late to family reunion in our honor. Meat family as they are leaving the house. Spend 15 minutes with them, eat with my grandparents, and go home and hit the pillow. It has been a long day!

Like I said, it was a busy week. But we did get one evening off on the Friday before we left, and we went downtown. We ate at a Créperie in the medival section of the city, and walked around after. We visited the restaurant where my dad was trained as a chef, and the current chef say us looking in the kitchen from outside, invited us all in, told my dad to give us a tour of the restaurant where he used to work, then served us Champagne. It was really neat to see the whole kitchen and restaurant! I had never been inside. He talked with us for a good hour, about how the restaurant is going, the old days under "La Mere Lea," and how things have changed (used to be a coal stove).

We were also able to see our adorable nephews a lot, and be with my sister Suzanne, and her husband Alex. It was great to see them again!

Doug Wilson preached a sermon during the Christmas season that I really appreciated! It was about the miracle that surrounds the account of the wise men being led by the Star of Bethlehem, but he ties that into the miracles that surround us everyday.

I have just finished my first Semester at College! That means I'm one eighth of the way through! Things have been so busy that I haven't had time to write, so now I'm not sure where to start. I think I'll just skip, because it would take to long to try and catch up.

Last Friday we went to watch The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. It was good, although a movie could never even start to match up to books like those of Lewis. Peter in particular annoyed me. He was too much the "reluctant hero," and he held his sword like one would hold a gun.. But I find they did do a good job of staying faithful to the book. The Stone Table cracking scene was very well done.
What was really fun about it was that there were about 60 Christ Church/NSA people there! A good portion of the theatre were people I knew! Thanks to Daniel Alders and Brad Littlejohn for putting it all together.

Today I had my last final which was Lordship. I felt it went pretty well except the Heidelberg that the questions were a bit rough.

I have greatly enjoyed my term at NSA! Here's a quick breakdown of my courses this term:

Lordship: Mr. Merkle is our teacher, and this term was on the Covenant. I really enjoyed the lecture on Infant Baptism.
Rhetoric: This was Logic term. quit difficult! we had to learn all kinds of fallacies, truth tables--the works!
Natural Philosophy: Anatomy. I really enjoyed this term of Natural Philosophy! This is the kind of subject that could be boring, but Dr. Wilson makes it come alive. You really sense his love for the subject.
Latin: Participles ahoy!

Next term is Poetry term for Rhetoric, and Practical Theology for Lordship. Already looking forward to it.

The following story appeared in the Moscow-Pullman Daily News, Monday, September 5.

If eating is a symphony, with each course as a movement, a professor at New Saint Andrews College has begun his opus.

Joshua Appel introduced 15 students to a harmonious world in NSA’s newest elective, Aesthetic Gastronomy. Through an intersection of sociology, philosophy, theology and history, his class examines the role of food in Western tradition and culture.

In recent lectures, Appel shared historical stories of Roman feasts where guests suffocated on roses and gladiators replaced centerpieces. He also taught students about the exotic origins of spices such as the hand-pollinated orchids of South America that produce vanilla beans. Last week, French chef and pastor Francis Foucachon guided the students through the acts of “decouvrir” — or discovering. He described the study of gastronomy as “removing the veil from what God created for us,” yet the only “bible” Foucachon brought to class was an English-language cookbook titled, “The Concise Larousse Gastronomique.”

In Moscow!

I have not posted in a very long time, and that is because we have been so busy. We have finally arrived in Moscow after traveling through Edmund, OK; Fort Collons, CO; up through Yellowstone National Park, then we stayed a couple days in Montana before finally arriving in Moscow, Idaho on August 1st. August 6-8 was Trinity Festival, and hoping to be posting stuff from then when I can. At present we don't yet have a stable internet connection. Our container has been delayed, so we hope that we will have it by the end of the week.

This morning was registration for NSA, as well as the book sale. Lectures start the 17th, and I'm looking forward to it!

I hope I'll have time to keep up somewhat with the blog, but no garantees!

Well, it has been quite a while since I have posted, and that is because we have been doing a non-stop race for the past month. Finishing school and then packing the house. We are now in Florida, I'm picking up some wifi in the front yard here, and the heat is oppressive. We have been car hunting the last few days, and I think that we have seen every single Chevrolet dealer in the Orlando area! I'll post a picture of our car when we buy it.
